What to expect from your consultation with an Osteopath…
On your first visit (usually lasting between 30-45 minutes), the Osteopath will complete a case history, consisting of an overview of symptoms/problems you are experiencing and questions regarding your general health and lifestyle.
The examination will then begin with a postural analysis. In some instances, you may be asked to remove some items of clothing so that the Osteopath can complete a thorough examination to provide an accurate diagnosis (so wear appropriate clothing or bring some shorts if possible). This will be followed by you performing some simple movements to determine your range of movement and also aid making a diagnosis. The Osteopath will then use a skilled touch known as palpation to further home in on the dysfunction and identify the state of the surrounding tissues.
Before hands on treatment, it's equally as important to discuss the diagnosis and how many treatment sessions might be necessary to help you understand your body and explain what can be expected.
Once understood, the treatment will consist of various techniques which may include massage, manipulation and modified stretching.
Following the treatment, simple exercises may be prescribed (if appropriate). It is your body, so if you have any questions absolutely ask them.
It is common to experience soreness for 24-48 hours following a treatment, the Osteopath will advise you on how to manage this during the session. It will usually consist of heat, cold, or a combination of the two.
